    • Guided by the broad theme “pop culture,” we’ve used Steven Johnson’s book Everything Bad is Good for You and a course packet of additional short texts (articles and short stories by writers such as Malcolm Gladwell and George Saunders) to explore some of the following questions: Is pop culture a positive, unifying force or a “manufactured” formula passing itself off as culture? Should we embrace it or try to escape? How does pop culture affect us as a society, as individuals? Can something be both art and popular culture? We’ve also devoted some time to satire/irony and, through an “email challenges” assignment, applied compositional and rhetorical strategies gleaned from papers to practical, everyday situations.
