Annual Essay Contest for WRT 101 and WRT 102
To participate students must be enrolled in WRT 102 during either the Fall or Spring semesters (or Summer term) of a given academic year. All papers prepared for the WRT102 portfolio - categories one, two and three respectively - are eligible for submission and a student can submit as many as three papers, one in each category. Every submission must be accompanied by a complete cover sheet (the kind required for the portfolio) and a signed permission-to-publish form. The deadline for submission will be during finals week of each semester, though extensions between Fall and Spring terms are possible if requested.
Judging is based on the quality and effectiveness of the writing. First, second and third place winners can be any one of the three categories: (1) personal piece, usually narration, (2) research essay and (3) textual analysis. Of the nine Honorable Mentions, three are chosen for each of the three categories to present a representative sample of the best of Stony Brook's student writing. Awards for the first, second and third place winners are presented every April at Stony Brook's annual Undergraduates Awards.
