Located in Humanities 2005, the Program in Writing
and Rhetoric offers the composition and rhetoric courses that fulfill
the writing requirement at Stony Brook. You can learn more about these

of our pages. The Program in Writing and Rhetoric also occasionally offers
courses in "Argumentative Writing"
(WRT 215) and "Advanced Analytic and Argumentative Writing" (WRT 381, 382).
Since every student who graduates from Stony Brook must fulfill a writing
requirement, virtually everyone has taken or will take a course in this
department. If you haven't yet taken an WRT course, we recommend that
you visit the "Placement Procedure"
section of these pages to ensure that you enroll in the correct writing
course.
Roughly half of the WRT 101 and WRT 102 courses are taught in our Electronic Writing Classrooms (EWC), where students have the opportunity to work on papers and engage in on-line, written discussions with one another and their teachers. Students can also get help with their papers by signing up for an appointment in our Writing Center. From the feedback that we have received from former students, we know that both of these facilities significantly reduce the anxiety students feel towards their writing and furnish invaluable resources for the development of critical thinking, logical organization, persuasive argumentation, and confidence in one's own personal voice. Those of you who prefer to learn about writing on your own should observe our Writing Utilities section, where we have links to a wide range of online, writing resources.
