Southampton Arts is building upon its excellent track record at record speed!
New offerings in Theatre were a tremendous success – and that’s only a preview of what’s to come…
THE SOUTHAMPTON DIRECTING CONFERENCE had its inaugural run this past July 2011. The newest addition to our summer offerings consisted of a series of master classes taught by internationally acclaimed directors, including Austin Pendleton, Mark Wing-Davey, Tony Walton and Kathleen Marshall. Theatre & Film Program Director Nick Mangano also taught and oversaw the workshops.
Directing participants took part in additional classes, readings and panels led by theatre artists Edward Albee, Jon Robin Baitz, Emily Mann, Jules Feiffer, Marsha Norman, Lesley Ayvazian, Adam Bock, and members of the esteemed Ensemble Studio Theatre (EST), who were in residence.
As if that weren’t enough inspiration, participants also attended presentations by novelists Roger Rosenblatt, Ursula Hegi, Meg Wolitzer, poets Billy Collins, Mark Doty, Julie Sheehan, essayist David Rakoff, and film director Chris Weitz, to name only a few more of our gifted guest faculty.
And, yes, plans are underway for another Directing Conference in the summer of 2012!
We are thrilled to announce that Southampton Arts will host the prestigious International Michael Chekhov Workshop & Festival (MICHA) during the 2012 Conference. There will be new and returning guest artist-teachers, and EST actors will join us once again to read student work, participate in directing workshops, and present their own original works-in-progress.
We are also expanding our Graduate programs in Theatre & Film during the academic year. This fall award-winning playwright Annie Baker is teaching a playwriting course, and Nick Mangano and Steve Hamilton will offer a director / playwright workshop in the spring. Conference participants are welcome to apply to the MFA program. Earned Conference credits can count toward the degree.
We are proud to offer this unparalleled experience for theatre directors. At Southampton Arts, the possibilities for crosspollination and inspiration are endless – and we’re in one of the most beautiful ocean side settings on the East Coast.
More details will be posted on this site as they become available.
