The inaugural Southampton Screenwriting Conference welcomes new and advanced screenwriters, as well as all writers interested in using the language of film to tell a story. The five-day residential Conference will inform, inspire, challenge, and further participants’ understanding of the art of the screenplay and the individual writing process. Our unique program of workshops, seminars, panel presentations, and screenings will encourage and motivate attendees under the professional guidance of accomplished screenwriters, educators, and script analysts.
WORKSHOPS
All workshops are limited in size and are
offered on two tracks: new and advanced
screenwriters. For writers new to the screenplay
form who hope to develop a first script,
workshops will cover intensively all aspects
of craft: Story, Structure, Character, and
Dialogue. Advanced screenwriters will have
an opportunity to rethink a work in progress
with the guidance of a professional writer and
teacher. Some possible workshop topics are
Writing for Emotional Impact, The Art of
Adaptation, Writing the Romantic Comedy,
Structure: From Idea to Script, Writing is
Rewriting, Creating Unforgettable Characters,
and Making the Script Your Own: Finding
Your Voice.
The faculty will include accomplished screenwriters who are also gifted, dedicated teachers, such as Malia Scotch Marmo (Hook, Madeline, and Once Around); Andrew Bienen (Boys Don’t Cry); Bette Gordon (filmmaker and cochair, School of the Arts, Columbia University); and respected consultants and script analysts Linda Seger (Making a Good Script Great) and Michael Hauge (Writing Screenplays That Sell).
GUEST SPEAKERS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Evening events will include panel discussions
by screenwriters, directors, and actors who
discuss the impact of the script, as well as
film screenings followed by informed discussion.
In the afternoon, participants may
choose from a wide range of elective sessions
on topics of special interest to screenwriters.
Participants will also enjoy a rich schedule of
formal and informal gatherings, from writer
receptions to an opportunity to visit the
beautiful beaches of the Hamptons. We are
pleased to offer three graduate credits to eligible
students.
