URECA Summer Program - Applications due March 15, 2010

Description:
The URECA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities) Program enables SB students to engage in full-time faculty-mentored research or creative activity for ten weeks. At the end of the ten-week period, the URECA participants will prepare abstracts of their work which will be published in the annual URECA Collected Abstracts book. They will also be required to present their work at the University's Celebration of Undergraduate Research & Creativity in the spring.

Award:
URECA Summer Research Program participants receive a $3,500 stipend. URECA students may opt to live on-campus during the URECA fellowship period but will responsible for paying their housing bill and should consult the Campus Residences Website for online housing forms, rates, and housing-related questions.

Eligibility:
This program is open to all Stony Brook undergraduates except those graduating in May 2009. URECA participants may not take classes or work at another job during the program.

Application:
The application packet consists of the following items: a completed application form; a typed attachment outlining the applicant's prior research experience, personal statement and research project proposal (see application); a transcript (unofficial); and a letter from the sponsoring faculty member. Applicants in non-laboratory disciplines who want to do work that builds upon a term paper done for a class and take it to the next level should also submit a copy of the paper as part of their application and explain in their application essay what they plan to do and what they anticipate their product will be.

The sponsoring faculty member's letter should comment on the student's research or creative capabilities and potential to carry out the specified project. Where appropriate/applicable, the faculty advisor should also address the issue of whether co-funding can be provided for the student.

In cases where the student's advisor is someone other than a faculty member, the application must include the CV of the external supervisor. In addition, the project and supervisor must be approved by the student's major department.

Candidates should submit one copy of the completed application by March 15th to URECA, Melville Library N-3070, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3357. You may obtain the application from the URECA office, or download the pdf file below.
