REU Physics & Astronomy Program at Stony Brook University
******The REU program has not been funded for summer 2013. Please check the NSF website for other available programs in Physics & Astronomy.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University is hosting an eight-week program for qualified undergraduate physics and/or astronomy majors. The program gives students an intensive research experience with leading researchers in the field.
REU participants will be assigned to a faculty mentor and become fully integrated into active research groups using state-of-the-art facilities. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with their faculty mentor, attend weekly seminars, participate in workshops and present their research results at a student symposium at the close of the program. Participants will be placed in one of the following areas:
- Accelerator science
- Astronomy (observational & theoretical)
- Atomic, molecular & optical physics
- Computational physics & astrophysics
- Condensed matter physics
- Laser Teaching Center
- Relativistic heavy ion physics
To learn more about our Physics & Astronomy Department, please visit: http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/ . See also undergraduate research opportunities in physics.
The REU Physics & Astronomy Program is open to all current undergraduate students majoring in the field of physics or astronomy (except those graduating in May 2012). Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
The State University of New York is an affirmative action, equal oportunity educator and employer. Please let us know if a disability-related accommodation is needed.
Although priority is typically given to sophomores and juniors, there are available positions for freshmen (e.g. Laser Teaching Center) and freshmen are encouraged to apply to the program.
Participants will receive a $3,500 stipend, lodging on-campus (double occupancy), and an allowance for food and round-trip transportation to Stony Brook. Funding for this program is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation and by grants to Physics & Astronomy faculty.
The application consists of the following items: a completed application form that includes an essay (1 page maximum) describing your research interests and your educational and professional plans [see application below) ; two letters of recommendation, and an unofficial transcript (*official transcripts will be requested upon acceptance to the program).
Deadline: March 1
Please mail (if possible in one envelope/package) a complete application to :
REU Program in Physics & Astronomy, N3070 Melville Library, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3357.
(References may also be sent directly to firstname.lastname@example.org if this is more convenient).
**Remember : your application is not complete without a transcript (unofficial) and your 2 letters of recommendation! It is the applicant's responsibility to request that the letters of recommendation be sent here.
