Battelle Summer Research Program

Dates:
June 9 - August 15, 2008

Description of program:
The Battelle Summer Research Program offers Stony Brook students a unique opportunity to carry out a funded research or design project full-time, either at Battelle Headquarters in Columbus, Ohio or at the nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). At the end of the ten-week period, Battelle participants prepare abstracts of their work for publication on the URECA web page and the annual URECA Collected Abstracts. They are required to give presentations of their work at the annual spring campus-wide research symposium, the Celebration of Undergraduate Research & Creativity.

Eligibility:
All Stony Brook freshmen, sophomores or juniors who have a minimum GPA of 3.4 and are majoring in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, environmental science, or a discipline that relates to ongoing work at Battelle or Brookhaven National Laboratory are eligible to apply. Battelle participants may not take classes or work at another job during the fellowship period. Applicants must be US citizens and/or permanent residents.

Award:
Battelle program participants will receive a $5,000 award. Four awards will be awarded each year based on a competitive review of applications.

Application: The completed application packet consists of: 1) an application form; 2) a typed attachment which identifies the applicant's prior research experience, a personal statement, and a research project proposal; 3) a transcript; and 4) a letter from a Brookhaven/Battelle research supervisor. The project proposal should be written entirely by the applicant, in consultation with the proposed faculty mentor/research supervisor. The letter of reference should comment on the student's research capabilities and potential to carry out the specific project, and should be provided in a sealed envelope with the research scientist''s signature across the seal. Please include 2 copies of the application form and essay with your application.

The research supervisor may hold a joint BNL/Stony Brook University appointment. Students are encouraged to seek advice from their Undergraduate Director or from Karen Kernan, in identifying a potential BNL research mentor. The BNL Website is also a good source of information.

The complete application packet should be submitted by March 17 March 28 to:
Battelle Summer Research Fellowship, N3070 Melville Library,
Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3357.
