Annual Report of University Senate Research Committee Academic Year 2010/2011

The efforts of the research committee were almost exclusively dedicated during the 2010/2011 academic year to creating, conducting and analyzing the results of a survey of Stony Brook faculty on research infrastructure and facilities.  This survey was a follow up to an earlier survey on the research enterprise at Stony Brook.

Work began work on generating questions for this survey during the spring and summer of 2010.  The survey was conducted in the second half of November 2010.  The Select Survey online survey tool was used for the survey.  There were 385 responses out of 2700 faculty the survey was made available to.  The committee worked on analyzing and presenting the results of the survey during spring 2011.  This was a more difficult survey to analyze than the committee’s earlier survey on faculty research and thus it took some time to prepare a final report.

The final report contains recommendations based on the survey.  It was delivered to the senate president at the end of summer 2011.

The committee wishes to thank all of the faculty who participated in the survey.  The survey would not have been possible without the technical assistance of Ying Xiong from Teaching, Learning and Technology (TLT).  The committee feels that its co-chair, Prof. Dominik Schneble of Physics deserves special mention for his extensive efforts in implementing the survey and processing its data.
We also wish to express our condolences to the family of the late Dr. John H. Marburger III, Vice President for Research, who suggested the idea of this survey.

It is hoped this survey will quantify to some extent faculty perceptions of the research infrastructure and facilities at Stony Brook.  It is also hoped that this survey and its recommendations will be useful in providing guidance for strategic planning of improvements and maintenance of Stony Brook’s research infrastructure and facilities.
