On October 20, 2011, Stony Brook University hosted a video chat with prospective students during our Virtual Open House. The chat was hosted by the Dean of Admissions, Judith Berhannan, and Stephanie Berlin, a sophomore at Stony Brook majoring in Psychology.
The Dean began with an overview of why Stony Brook should be among students’ top choices when looking at higher education. “What we believe and what we know to be true is that Stony Brook offers you the best of both worlds. It offers you a top-tier research university that has the feel of a small liberal arts campus in terms of the personality and environment,” said Ms. Berhannan. The Dean notes that Stony Brook is a relatively young school, but has accomplished much in its short history. “We like to think of Stony Brook as a rising star.”
Stephanie then spoke about her experiences as a Stony Brook student, and about her goal of attending the Physician Assistant program at Stony Brook after graduation. The Dean and Stephanie both commented on the top notch faculty at Stony Brook. “Every one of my professors that I have come in contact with has been incredibly friendly… and never unapproachable,” said Stephanie.
The Dean gave an overview of the many majors and minors offered at Stony Brook, as well as the many research opportunities and ground-breaking discoveries that have been made on campus. Stephanie added information about getting involved many groups on campus, and she talked about her experience in the Undergraduate Colleges.
Before taking questions from the audience about campus housing, admission requirements, and special honors programs, the Dean and Stephanie took a moment to highlight some great Stony Brook Traditions such as the Roth Regatta, Strawberry Fest, and EarthStock.
