Christopher D'Orso, Assistant Director of Admissions
In our lively Admissions Overview Chat, Assistant Director of Admissions Chris D’Orso and Sarah Kahn, a junior Biology major and one of our Student Bloggers, give a brief overview of Stony Brook and field a number of questions from prospective students. The chat starts off with Chris discussing the academic profile we look for in freshman applicants, as well as how and when we review applications. Chris notes that we look for reasons to admit people” when reviewing applications." We do not have automatic cutoffs; rather we take a holistic approach to try to enroll a strong class each year."
In answering many of the questions regarding admissions, Chris and Sarah discuss academic advising and planning, the merits of living on and off campus, clubs and teams on campus, our Diversified Education Curriculum, in-state and out-of-state tuition, and give information regarding international application procedures.
Sarah then describes our on campus living options and class size, especially how our departments work to engage students in larger lecture hall courses. She notes that professors are very accessible to their students through office hours and e-mailing.
Chris continues on to talk about several of our majors, including Computer Science, Health Science, Sustainability Studies, and Journalism. Further questions that come up include those about our Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Health and Pre-Law programs, the Honors College, our Upper-Division Programs (including Nursing, Social Work and Occupational Therapy) as well as the geographic location and size of the University.
