Our Housing Guarantee*
On-campus living is a very popular option at Stony Brook. In order to offer as many students as possible the experience of our residential learning environment, strategies that include assigning three students to a double room and other temporary housing will be utilized. This is being done by universities across the nation and has been shown to have no detrimental effect on student performance.
Freshmen: All new freshmen are guaranteed housing provided, the tuition/housing deposit is received and their new student preferences are submitted online by May 1 for the fall semester and December 15 for the spring semester. Those submitting their deposit and new student preferences after these deadlines will be accommodated on a space-available basis.
Transfers: All new transfers who pay their tuition/housing deposit and submit their housing preferences online will be assigned campus housing on a space-available basis. Eligibility will depend upon the timely receipt of both the tuition/housing deposit and housing preferences, as well as the actual availability of space. New transfers we are unable to offer on-campus housing will receive assistance with locating housing through the services of our off-campus housing office.
*Students in good standing who enter the University as freshmen and successfully complete all required room selection processes are guaranteed eight semesters of campus housing.

Highly Qualified Staff
Our diverse Campus Residences staff includes Quad
Directors, Residence Hall Directors, and administrative
offices within each quad. Each Residence Hall is
supervised by a full-time, live-in professional Residence
Hall Director who is available daily for guidance on
academic and interpersonal issues. Student Resident
Assistants supervise living units, coordinate social
and educational programs, ensure safety, and act as
resources for students. The student-to-staff ratio is
36:1—comparable to or better than similar institutions.
Close-Knit Community
As a freshman, you will live in a community—called
an Undergraduate College— based on shared interests
and resources. You will have easy access to your
academic advising and your Undergraduate College faculty director, as well as small one-credit seminars
located right where you live. Linked activities such
as field trips, guest speakers, and social events, are
integrated into these seminars.
If you are a transfer student, you can choose to live in
a Living Learning Center based on one of nine
academic themes, and you may elect to complete an
academic minor designed around your Living Learning
Center’s theme.
Specialty living areas, such as Quiet Lifestyle, 24-Hour
Quiet Communities, and alcohol/tobacco-free areas,
are offered in selected buildings in every quad.
Residential Tutoring Centers (RTC)
The Residential Tutoring Centers provide students with qualified tutors to help answer specific questions about some of the University's most challenging and demanding courses. They also create a centralized location for students to work with fellow classmates to help you learn from each other. Further, the Residential Tutoring Centers hold review sessions for these courses before scheduled exams.
Have More Friends
Make friendships that can last a lifetime. Enjoy convenient access to sporting events, musical and theatrical events, movies, and more. Keep up with social events; more takes place in the residence halls than anywhere else on campus. Be spontaneous. Join a club! Participate in campus traditions like Homecoming, the Roth Pond Regatta, Spirit Night, the Shirley Strum Kenny Arts Festival, Midnight Breakfast, and COCA movies. Take an active role in intramural sports.
Red Hot Technology
Our Residence Halls and apartments
are continually being updated and
outfitted with the latest in technology
and innovation. All rooms offer high-speed Internet
access. Each quad also has its own state-of-the-art
computing center open seven days a
week, offering daytime and late-night
hours for residents. Centers are staffed
by knowledgeable students who can
provide training and assistance.
All-Weather Fitness
Each quad has its own fitness center
featuring Nautilus and Cybex equipment.
Some fitness centers offer aerobics
classes, and all are staffed by
trained students who can provide
assistance. Fitness centers are open
late-night hours for residents.
Feel Safe and Secure
Your personal safety is our priority.
The Residential Safety Service provides a presence
at the main entrance of every Residence Hall at night,
limiting access to residents and their guests.- Exterior doors are always locked; residents swipe their ID cards to access most residential buildings.
- At night, walking escorts are available from any point on campus back to your Residence Hall.
Our University Police Officers are part of the
New York
State Police Department. They patrol the
campus, including
residential areas 24 hours a day,
and close it to unauthorized
persons at midnight.- Blue Light Phones, located throughout the campus, enable students to seek assistance at any time.
- Personal safety education programs are offered to
students
throughout the academic year.
