Scholarships for Continuing Students

Stony Brook University is committed to recognizing and rewarding our students' excellence in all areas of learning and research. We offer a variety of scholarships to continuing students, some of which are based on merit alone and others which take into account financial need.

Stony Brook Alumni Association The Alumni Association is sponsoring seven awards to students who have excelled in different areas, including academics, leadership, and the improvement of community life. Recipients will receive a plaque honoring their accomplishments, as well as a cash award.

Alumni Association Legacy Award ($750)
Awarded to a student who demonstrates academic success and leadership in the campus community and is the child of a Stony Brook Alumna/ae.

Babak Movahedi Senior Leadership Award ($1,000) Established by Babak Movahedi '82; this award is presented to a graduating senior who has made a significant change in the University environment bringing together various constituencies through the development of community life.

Larry Roher Entrepreneurial Achievement Award
($1,000) Established by Larry Roher ‘79, this award is presented to an undergraduate who has served in a managerial and leadership role either on or off campus or who has pursued entrepreneurial and innovative programs or activities.

Joseph N. Campolo Award for Legal Studies ($750) Awarded to a student preparing to enter the practice of law who has demonstrated a commitment to public service.

Outstanding Future Alumni Award ($750)
Awarded to a high-achieving student who has demonstrated excellence in academic performance and community service and has made valuable contributions to the University community. (2 awarded)

Ashley Schiff Preserve Scholarship
The Ashley Schiff Preserve Scholarship recognizes Stony Brook University undergraduate and graduate students of outstanding academic ability who demonstrate a commitment to environmental preservation through academic studies or research projects using the Ashley Schiff Preserve. This is an annual one year scholarship of up to $1,000.
An application is required by July 1st.

Elizabeth D. Couey Award and Senior Leadership and Service Awards The Couey Award was established in 1974 in memory of Stony Brook's first Coordinator of Student Activities. Ms. Couey's concerns for students and student life greatly contributed to the growth of University student services and to the establishment of the Stony Brook Union.

The award is presented each year to seniors who plan to graduate during that calendar year. The nominees must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 at the time of nomination. The nominees must have made outstanding contributions towards the improvements and growth of student affairs and student programs at Stony Brook.

The nominees must also exemplify Elizabeth Couey's unique qualities, which include the ability to listen with understanding, guide without boundaries, give and take with love and grow with each passing day. The Senior Leadership and Service Awards are given to graduating seniors who have made an outstanding contribution to campus life by making a difference in the lives of other Stony Brook Community members. The award is presented each year to seniors who plan to graduate during that calendar year.

Nominees must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 at the time of the nomination. Nominees must have demonstrated leadership and/or service through tangible contributions to the University.

CSEMS - Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship Program The Stony Brook Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The program is administered by the Department of Technology and Society in Stony Brook’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The program will provide a comprehensive support and scholarship program for associates and bachelors degree candidates at Nassau and Suffolk County Community Colleges and Stony Brook University. Applicants for CSEMS must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
form on file with their campus’ office of financial aid.
Cyber Security Scholarship Stony Brook University NSF scholarships are available to juniors and seniors and graduate students who are U.S. citizens majoring in computer science with a special interest in information assurance.  Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum 2.8 grade point average; graduate students must have 3.2.  Scholarships include support toward tuition, room and board, stipends, and paid summer internships. Departmental Scholarships Many of our academic departments have scholarships and monetary awards for students majoring in their discipline. These vary in amount and requirements. Recipients, chosen by the department, are generally continuing students who have outstanding academic records in a particular field or endeavor. Check with your academic department to see what scholarships may be available and if an application or nomination is required.

Disability Support Services The Sylvia Fund supports two $500 awards in memory of Sylvia Geoghegan, a talented Stony Brook University alumna and artist and a professional staff person in DSS.

A student with a disability must be in good standing (2.0+ cumulative grade point average) after at least two semesters at Stony Brook (sophomores through graduate students may apply). At least one award will be given to a student with specific artistic interest or promise.

Don Jose Marti Award This $1,000 award is presented by Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Chapter, of Stony Brook University. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher may apply.

Criteria include service to the Latino community on the Stony Brook campus; letters of recommendation from faculty or staff; resume highlighting your academics and community service; and an essay describing how your life exemplifies that of Jose Marti.

Division of Information Technology Scholarship The employees of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) at Stony Brook University have established a Scholarship Fund, to offer support towards educational expenses, to a continuing student who has demonstrated an interest in the field of Information Technology. Students who are eligible to apply for and receive this scholarship must meet the following qualifications at the time of application:

(a) Enrolled as a full time Stony Brook University undergraduate student with a demonstrated interest in the field of Information Technology;
(b) Completed at least 24 Stony Brook University credits prior to the year that the scholarship will be awarded;
(c) In good academic standing at the completion of the Spring Semester prior to the Fall Semester award;
(d) Submitted unofficial transcript(s) of undergraduate courses and grades;
(e) Submitted a completed application for the DoIT Scholarship;
(f) Preference will be given to residents of New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island) and Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk);
(g) Special consideration will be given to current DoIT student employees.

Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarship The Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarship (ESDHS) Program is a scholarship of direct aid to attract and retain undergraduate students to State University of New York (University) campuses who have demonstrated high academic achievement and can demonstrate that they will contribute to the diversity of the student body. The program is for students from a broad range of backgrounds who will contribute to the diversity of the student body in their chosen program or school.  Eligible students must be enrolled in a degree program and have demonstrated high academic achievement.  They must also be currently receiving a 4 year Stony Brook University merit based scholarship.

Recipients are not required to demonstrate financial need. However, to determine eligibility for  other state and federal financial aid, all recipients are asked to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Participants must be:

(a) U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens and

(b) New York State residents, who will make a contribution to the diversity of the student body in their program or school, primarily by demonstrating that they have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education.

Even though financial need is not a requirement for program eligibility, applicants may utilize economic disadvantage as a basis for eligibility. Membership in a racial/ethnic group that is underrepresented in the program or school for which the student is applying may serve as a plus factor in making awards, but may not form the sole basis of such an award and every student applicant shall be evaluated on his or her own merits.

Faculty Student Association Scholarship Fund

The Faculty Student Association (FSA) at Stony Brook University has established a Scholarship Fund to encourage and reward timely progress toward graduation, encourage good performance in undergraduate college freshman seminars, and continued campus involvement through student employment. There will be 20 new 3 year scholarships (of $1000 annually) awarded each year to qualified applicants.

Linda and Richard Gelfond Scholarship This one-year scholarship (minimum $2,000) was established to recognize full time Stony Brook University students of outstanding academic ability and exceptional leadership skills. Continuation of the scholarship is based upon application and selection in subsequent years.

Applicants must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and excellent leadership skills. The final selection process will take place during the summer and applicants will be notified of the committee's decisions before classes begin in the fall.

An application is required by June 30th.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Research Fellows Academic Year and Summer Awards The Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellow program provides support to selected students in support of their research in the biological sciences at Stony Brook. Women and students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Howard Hughes Fellows will receive $3000 plus $500 for laboratory supplies for their research during the academic year and $1500 plus room and board for ten weeks for the summer awards.

Connie and Lee Koppelman Scholarships Up to four $1,000 one-year scholarships are offered annually to outstanding juniors or seniors majoring in Women's Studies, Political Science or another discipline in the College of Arts and Sciences. A faculty committee is convened to select recipients based upon academic performance and financial need. No application is required.

University Libraries Distinguished Student Employee Award The University Libraries Distinguished Student Employee Award was established in 2004 by the University Libraries faculty/staff to reward outstanding work and commitment to the University Libraries by the library student staff. This award will be determined on merit and applicants must be employed by the University Libraries. MARC - Minority Access to Research Careers Tuition scholarships and stipend funding are available to outstanding juniors and seniors who are members of underrepresented groups and who plan to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the biological sciences or a related field. Pride Scholarship (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Faculty and Staff Network Scholarship) Individuals eligible for this scholarship shall be enrolled as full-time Stony Brook University matriculated students (undergraduate or graduate) participating in any program on either the east or west campus who identify with the goals of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer ("LGBTQ") campus community; and, who satisfactorily complete the application process.

This is a one-year scholarship. Students may reapply for consideration for subsequent years.

Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship The purpose of the Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship is to increase representation of minority and disadvantaged individuals in New York State licensed professions. Applications and information are available from Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship Website.
Shiming Hu Memorial Scholarships Leadership Award - For a graduating senior who has played a significant leadership role in a campus Asian interest club or organization.

Chinese Studies Scholarship - For an upper-division student (U3 or U4) displaying excellence in the study of Chinese language or culture.

S-STEM - Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics

Sustainability Scholarship Sophomores and juniors with 3.5+ cumulative grade point average, in any major, who can demonstrate personal activities and/or support for the philosophy and goals of environmental sustainability are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Minimum award: $500

URECA - Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity Summer Fellowships

The URECA summer research program provides a $3500 stipend to select Stony Brook undergraduates doing full-time research or creative activity for ten weeks in the summer under the supervision of a Stony Brook faculty member. The URECA students prepare abstracts of their work for publication in URECA's annual Collected Abstracts and give presentations of their work at the University's "Celebration of Undergraduate Research & Creativity" in the spring. Students in all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Undergraduates may also apply for URECA Small Grants (up to $300 for materials or supplies) and/or URECA Travel Grants (up to $400 for undergraduates presenting or co-presenting at professional meetings or conferences).

Debbie Whittemore Memorial Scholarship

The Debbie Whittemore Scholarship is annually awarded to two continuing undergraduate students who display outstanding academic excellence and have made significant contributions to student life and athletics on the campus and within the community. Academic excellence (minimum of 3.0 grade point average), community service, leadership and athletic accomplishments will be considered in the final selection.

The Scholarship provides up to $1000 per year. It is awarded one time in March/April, and usually applied to the following fall semester. Upon special request it can be applied to an unpaid spring or summer balance. It is credited to the students' accounts.

Women Economic Developers of Long Island (WEDLI) Entrepreneurial Scholarship WEDLI's Madelyn Orsini Scholarships of up to $1000 are awarded to college students in either their freshman, sophomore or junior year of a college located on Long Island.

WEDLI also offers a twice yearly $750 Dorothy Tripp/Sally Slacke Scholarship, funded by Roslyn D. Goldmacher and Judith K. Beckman.

World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship The World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship guarantees access to a college education for survivors, their families, financial dependents of innocent victims, and those who were severely and/or permanently disabled as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America, or rescue and recovery efforts. This includes victims at the World Trade Center site, Pentagon or on flights 11, 77, 93, or 175.
