Undergraduate Scholarships at Stony Brook University

Introduction to Scholarships
Stony Brook University is committed to recognizing and rewarding our students' excellence in all areas of learning and research. We offer a variety of scholarships to new and continuing students, some of which are based on merit alone and others which take into account financial need. The majority of our scholarships require no special applications; all admitted students who are academically qualified are automatically considered for the available scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Special scholarships are offered to National Merit Scholarship Competition and Intel Science Talent Research Finalists and Semifinalists, valedictorians, and salutatorians.

Criteria for Scholarships
The majority of our scholarships are offered based upon Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid information and recommendations. If a student has demonstrated financial need, any offered scholarships will be part of the whole financial aid package, not to exceed the budgeted cost of attendance. To maximize your consideration for all scholarships at Stony Brook we encourage you to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible in January of the year preceding your fall enrollment.

Scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences may be offered because of a student’s exceptional academic achievement, research experience, or special talents or skills in the performing and creative arts. Some scholarship recipients are selected by a special committee.

Amount and Duration of Scholarships
Scholarships range from $1000 to full scholarship support for four years (Tuition costs for 2006: New York State resident $4,350 or non-resident $10,610). Full scholarships are very selective and require a student to be a National Merit Scholar or Intel Science Talent Research Finalist or Semifinalist. Some scholarships are for one year only, while others are renewable based upon meeting the criteria of the specific scholarship. In most cases, students will not be awarded more than one scholarship and it will be the most beneficial scholarship offer that we can make. Scholarships can be applied to the costs of a Stony Brook education and need not be used for tuition only.

Stony Brook University's scholarships begin upon enrollment in the fall semester of the academic year for which they are offered. There are no scholarships that begin in the spring semester.
