Why Stony Brook?

Stony Brook has been ranked among the top 50 universities in North America and 10th among U.S. public universities. The fact that Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory — both institutions of excellence in the physical and biological sciences, respectively and featured Nobel Prize winning scientists --- are part of the Stony Brook family, indicates a unique commitment to higher scientific education and research. Stony Brook also has one of the best university teaching hospitals in the region.

Not surprisingly, The QS World Rankings ranks Stony Brook among the top 200 of all universities worldwide.

Stony Brook enjoys a unique location. New York, the city with its great cultural attractions, is only a two hour train ride away. And yet it is just far enough that it will not be a distraction.

baithakNaturally, you would like to be in touch with your motherland and its traditional values and heritage. For this, we have an invaluable resource on campus – the only one of its kind in the US -- the Center for India Studies. The Center offers courses ranging from Indian languages (Hindi, Sanskrit), literature, mythology, religions, the great epics, classical music and dances of India. We also teach Contemporary India (Post-1947), India’s Foreign Policy and Indians in America. All these are taught by distinguished faculty, which includes world class artists and experts with decades of field experience. The Center also features a rich India Library and sponsors lectures and concerts by the finest Indian intellectuals and artists.

There is a substantive presence of students of Indian origin on the campus, besides several faculty in practically every discipline. For the students, Stony Brook features a diverse and dynamic range of student organizations and activities dedicated to the arts and cultures of South Asia. They range from ‘Tillana’ to ‘Club Om’, ‘Bengalis Unite’ to the ‘Stony Brook Cricket Club’.

Last, and perhaps not the least, with my own background of thirty-eight years’ in India’s diplomatic service before coming to Stony Brook, I take great pride in mentoring students from my country who choose to make this great University their academic home for a brighter and secure future.
