Our Outstanding Faculty

facultyAt a world-class research university such as Stony Brook, you can expect to find world-class researchers and scholars. But many of our leading scholars and researchers are also inspiring teachers and they have the awards to prove it. We're committed to putting our best teachers into our undergraduate classes, so you can take courses in biochemistry, Spanish, music, philosophy, or any number of other subjects with teachers who've earned the recognition of their students and their peers as the best in their class.

In fact, many of our faculty have been recognized by the Chancellor of the State University of New York as some of the best teachers SUNY has to offer.

  • With 2,954 faculty, our student/faculty ratio is 18:1

  • Nearly all full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees in their fields

  • They're responsible for more than 1,840 inventions and more than 500 U.S. patents

  • They mentor on average 10% of the 300 Intel Science Talent Search competition finalists and semifinalists each year, making SB the second-largest incubator of Intel talent in the country

  • As part of SUNY 2020, we plan to add more than 250 faculty over the next five years, which will result in expanded research and mentoring opportunities for our students
