assanisDear Incoming Stony Brook University Students,

As the Chief Academic Officer of Stony Brook University, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Stony Brook.  I am sure we have made a wise decision in offering you a place here, and I know you have made a great choice in coming.

Stony Brook University was founded in 1957. In a short period of time, Stony Brook has become an internationally renowned public research university that aims for academic excellence. Stony Brook is a member of the elite Association of American Universities (AAU), North America’s 62 most distinguished research universities. And we have the 7th most selective public research university in admitting students within the AAU.  We are very proud to share with you that the U.S. News & World Report has placed us as one of the top 35 public universities in the nation.

We have grown to an academic body of over 2,800 faculty and nearly 25,000 students – including you! And we are continuously growing. In addition to its main campus, the University now includes locations to its east in Southampton and to its west in Manhattan. In spring 2012, Stony Brook expanded its academic offerings to the Songdo Global University Campus in South Korea under the banner of SUNY Korea. The University also manages nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy and has close ties with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Currently, the University offers its students a prestigious and diverse range of over 300 academic programs from which to choose, including 94 Bachelor’s programs, 126 Master’s programs, 56 doctoral programs, and 44 graduate certificate programs. Stony Brook also offers its students a plethora of research opportunities, including the Simons Summer Research Program, the program in Undergraduate Research, Education and Creative Activities, Women in Science in Engineering, and our Honors College.
In addition to this tremendous breadth in academic offerings, Stony Brook offers musical and artistic showcases at our Staller Center for the Arts, is home to more than 300 student clubs and organizations and, in sports, the Department of Athletics supports 20 Division I varsity intercollegiate athletic programs.

It is our mission at Stony Brook to provide comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, and to carry out research and intellectual endeavors of the highest quality. It is also our responsibility to provide leadership for economic growth, technology, and culture for neighboring communities and the wider geographic region, as well as to provide state-of-the-art innovative health care. And we are fulfilling these objectives while celebrating diversity and positioning the University in the global community.

In closing, I am delighted that you have decided to enroll at Stony Brook and that you will become a part of our Stony Brook community. I would like to extend my best wishes as you embark on new and exciting opportunities. We know that you will make the most of your time here at Stony Brook, and that you will also strengthen our community with your achievements. I am certain you will find Stony Brook a great place to learn, and a great place to live. Congratulations, once again, and welcome to our great university and to our community of scholars!

With best wishes for the academic year,

Dennis Assanis
