ERM Launches "Inside Stony Brook," Private Social Network for Admitted Students
In January 2013, the Offices of Enrollment and Retention Management launched "Inside Stony Brook," a new private social network for admitted students housed within Facebook. The network is powered by Inigral, a San Francisco-based company recently highlighted by The Chronicle of Higher Education in Eric Hoover's article "Facebook Meets Predictive Analytics."
Inigral is partly funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for offering a communication tool that enables students to build support structures and persist throughout their collegiate careers. The company is also part of Facebook's Preferred Developer Program, offering their staff insight into Facebook's direction and upcoming releases.
While ERM staff have hosted public Facebook platforms for admitted students for many years, "Inside Stony Brook" takes the potential level of social interaction to new heights.
Within the network, students can join multiple communities themed around their academic and extracurricular interests, meet other students from their hometown, plan meet up events and receive announcements from Stony Brook staff through Facebook and on their smartphones.
To maintain "Inside Stony Brook," ERM has partnered with staff from Academic Affairs, Student Orientation and Family Programs, the Dean of Students, and Division of Student Life. Keyword and question alerts allow designated staff members and current students to quickly respond to inquiries related to their unit.
ERM staff benefit from a new communications apparatus and high level analytics on activity and engagement, which will enable Stony Brook to better support our students.
