MAJORS: Linguistics and French
HOMETOWN: Portland, Maine
“Learning about the science of language was fascinating to me. I came to Stony Brook for that reason. A couple of my professors were doing research on a syntactic phenomenon in romance languages. They recruited me to help with French-to-English translations. Then I was poking around with my professor to see if there was anything else I can do, and she found a little chunk of data that hadn’t been analyzed. I’m putting together my research proposal now.”
FAVORITE PROFESSOR John Bailyn, Linguistics
“He’s dynamic and funny. I’ve taken three of his classes and gone with him to the Linguistics study abroad program in Saint Petersburg, Russia.”
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY DEPARTMENT:
“It’s pretty small, so you get to know everybody.
The professors are all really casual and approachable — we call them by their first names.”
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS: The Press office in the basement of the Union
“There are always colleagues and friends there, and it’s a really nice creative environment.”
FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION: Bicycle
“I brought two to school.”
