Assessment of Service and Civic Engagement (ASCE) Study

    From: Manny London, Faculty Director

Please respond to this survey. We want a strong response from LDS since this deals with the theme of our College.

As part of a national survey of community service performed by college students, all undergraduate Stony Brook University students are invited to take this short survey. Regardless of your participation in community service, your opinions and experiences are important. Results contribute to a growing understanding of community service by college students here at Stony Brook and at colleges and universities across the country. How engaged are Stony Brook students? You tell us!

Click here to begin the survey.

Completion of the 2011 Assessment of Service and Civic Engagement makes you eligible to enter a raffle for one of several prizes: (1) Gift certificates: $150, $100, or $50, (2) sweatshirts and (3) an electronic prize.

The survey is endorsed by Stony Brook University and delivered by the Siena College Research Institute (SRI). SRI ensures the confidentiality of all respondents and participation is voluntary.

Miss October: Raising Awareness about Ovarian Cancer is the LDS Big Give Winner for 2010-2011

Congratulations go to Alexander Avgeris, Laura Urciuoli, Jessica Smith, Sandra Wong, and John Gasior for winning this year's LDS Big Give Competition for their project "Miss October" that raised awareness about Ovarian Cancer. The project was founded in memorial of Avgeris' aunt, Jill Ann Panagiotidis who recently lost her battle with ovarian cancer. The group's passionate and well-constructed presentation wowed the judges at the Big Give Awards Banquet in December. The group, formed in Karima Woodyard's LDS 101 class, vows "to educate the students at Stony Brook University about the signs and symptoms of the disease, so that women will know how to prevent it from happening to them. Miss October feels that it is necessary to spread awareness not only to women, but to men as well because they too can contribute by passing on their knowledge to others."

The group will be leading the charge to organize their informational documentary evening in the Spring Semester that will feature "Our Struggle," a film commemorating Ms. Panagiotidis that interviews many survivors of the disease. The group is currently raising money for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) by selling pins, ribbons, and bracelets.

Congratulations to all our finalists! Our top finalists included "PACE 4 PC," a walk to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer; "Stony Brook Bike-a-Thon," a bicycle race to promote awareness of lung cancer; "iHaveFaith," an interfaith information fair to promote religious tolerance; and "Awakening Awareness," a documentary evening promoting fair trade coffee.
