Stephen Yazulla is a Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior. He holds a joint appointment as Professor of Ophthalmology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Delaware and, after Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Delaware and Harvard University, joined the Stony Brook Faculty in 1974. His research on neural mechanisms of vision was funded by the National Eye Institute for over 30 years; he is the author of over 100 research papers. In addition to the research, he enjoys interacting with undergraduates both in the class and laboratory setting. As the new Faculty Director of SSO, he sees this opportunity to participate more actively in leading students through their undergraduate experience, particularly in the transition from high school to college.
Stacey was born and raised in New York City and made her trek out to Stony Brook as a freshman in the fall of 1999. She has spent the last few years at the university graduating with both her BA in Sociology (2003) and her Masters in Social Work (2006). Stacey first found her love of undergraduate education as a student herself when she was involved in founding "School of Thought" (a club dedicated to innovative change and the betterment of the environment) and being the treasurer in the Social Justice Alliance. She also spent a summer studying in Italy and greatly recommends that experience to all students. As a graduate student she worked in the Office of Commuter Student Services where she thoroughly enjoyed her work and the enthusiasm of her coworkers. Stacey is one of the Undergraduate College Advisors for the College of Science and Society and is excited to be at working at a place where she has spent so many of her formative years and had such great experiences.
She hopes that her students have as great a time here as she did.
Beth McGuire is the new Quad Director for Roth Quad but she is not new to the University. Beth received her Bachelor of Arts with a minor in Human Gender and Sexual Development at SBU. She went on to receive a Masters in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Substance Abuse Prevention and Education. As a student here at Stony Brook she was involved in many activities including RSP, judicial board and Hall Government. In addition to those activities she became a Resident Assistant, then a Graduate Assistant and then professionally a Residence Hall Director. It was through the involvement in student organizations and groups which led her to the field of student affairs. Beth is happy to be back on campus where she lives with her husband Arthur. Beth believes that through experiences outside of the classroom or in small groups we learn some of our greatest and most valuable lessons. Last year Beth and her husband went on a 5 week cross country trip. Getting out in the world and getting your hands dirty helps create lasting memories as well as lessons. Beth hopes to see you get out there and get involved with whatever it is that makes you tick!

Dr. Lwiza is a marine physicist. He studies ocean processes that affect transport (e.g., currents and tides) and density distribution (e.g., mixing and heat balance). His research interests are climate change, structure and dynamics of the coastal seas, and remote sensing. He designs field experiments to observe these processes by incorporating modern technology, with a particular emphasis on the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), GPS-tracked Lagrangian drifters, and ocean gliders, and satellites.
