Participants include Prof. Miriam Rafailovich, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Jim Smith, the Director of the New York State Center for Advanced Energy Research and Technology.  The event will include presentations and a panel discussion (including questions) concerning future solutions to society’s energy needs, including development of new technologies for non-polluting, renewable energy generation and conservation methods. Stony Brook research into alternative energy to limit climate change will also be discussed.

The Robotics Jamboree
Thursday 11/8, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, SAC Ballroom A

Transhumanism – How Technology is Transforming what it Means to be Human
Wednesday 11/28, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, SAC Ballroom B

Participants include Professor Eduardo Mendieta, Latin American Studies Center and author of upcoming book on biophilosophy (including “bio-piracy”), and Dr. Michael Hadjiargyrou, Stony Brook University's Associate Vice President for Research and faculty in Biomedical Engineering, who will discuss genetic engineering and its future impact on our lives.  Panel discussion and perhaps debate on the topic of technological transformation of humans – from genetic engineering to pharmaceutical enhancement to “cyborg-esque” implants to … whatever is beyond that!  Very speculative, and may also consider such issues as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and artificial life.
