Course Title

Introduction to Stony Brook

Course Description

A seminar intended to integrate students into their Undergraduate College and into the University community by providing information about Stony Brook and a forum for discussion of values, intellectual and social development, and personal as well as institutional expectations. Required for all first year students.
Prerequisite: Admission to the appropriate Undergraduate College.
1 credit, S/U grading.

Goals

Assist students in understanding their personal development and ability to make appropriate decisions.
Establish a mentoring relationship between students and First Year Seminar instructors.
Increase awareness and utilization of student support services.
Provide opportunities to interact with and learn from peers in each Undergraduate College.

Prescribed Curricular Content

All lesson topics are coordinated and/or taught by identified presenters.
  • Prevention and Outreach - Lesson taught by Center for Prevention and Outreach staff
  • Academic Advising - Group advising facilitated by UGC Advisors
  • First Year Reading - Students attend a Commons Day event and discuss reading in class
  • UGC Weeks (2) - Curricular content determined by individual UGC Teams
