Degree Requirements

All students are responsible for reviewing and abiding by the University’s regulations, requirements, and deadlines as detailed in the Undergraduate Bulletin, which can be accessed online at stonybrook.edu/ugbulletinAn official, complete listing of degree requirements appears in the Undergraduate Bulletin under “Academic Policies and Regulations”. 

  • All undergraduates must complete 128 credits for a Bachelor of Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; 127 credits for a Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism; and 120 credits for all other schools and majors
  • A minimum of 100 earned credits must be letter-graded (A-D or S).
  • All undergraduates must complete at least 39 upper-division credits (classes at the 300-level or higher)
  • All undergraduates must complete all required skill and DEC requirements
  • All undergraduates must complete an academic major (minor is optional)
  • All undergraduates must complete the residency requirement (at least 36 credits at Stony Brook after earning the 57th credit)
  • All undergraduates must earn at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA. 
  • Once enrolled at Stony Brook as a matriculated student, the DEC A writing requirement (WRT 101 and WRT 102) must be completed at Stony Brook.

You can use these pages as a worksheet to keep track of the courses you take to fulfill your degree requirements.

You can access your Degree Progress Report via the SOLAR System at any time to keep track of the general education requirements.

    Advisors are available to meet with you in three ways:
