Course Planning > Grading

All 102 seminars are graded on an A – C/U basis.
Students will be evaluated on the basis of exams, short written assignments, journals, presentations, and participation in discussion of lecture materials, and interaction with faculty and other students.  Because of the variety of offerings, it is not possible to specify precise breakdowns of the value of each type for all sections.

There are two major factors that distinguish A-C/U graded courses from A-F graded courses. The most obvious factor is the lack of a D. Any student who does not earn a C should be awarded a U. The second factor is that U does not count towards a student's GPA, but is simply entered on the student's record as a U, with no credit earned. The two factors counterbalance each other. A U does not affect the student's GPA, but it is impossible to receive credit for less than C work.
