Thank you to each of you who will be teaching a 102 Seminar this spring. This website is intended to support faculty teaching the Undergraduate College 102 seminars. Stony Brook is unique among public research universities in having integrated into the curriculum of all first-year students an academic seminar primarily taught by full-time tenured faculty, with more than 120 sections offered each spring. Our continued success in ensuring availability of these seminars is due largely to the generosity of those members of the Stony Brook faculty who recognize the value to the entire university of establishing close ties between students and faculty during the freshman year. 2011 is my fifth year as a 102 instructor and it is great when students from my earlier 102 classes greet me on campus.
We have a combination of faculty who have taught the seminar before and many for whom this will be a new experience. To support all faculty, we have compiled a variety of information useful for new as well as experienced 102 instructors. We expect the contents of the website to grow, so check back periodically. Again, remember that the seminar is not meant to only provide an academic experience for our students; it is also meant to provide an opportunity for students to interact extensively with a faculty member. We hope that this website will help in that effort.
