Being a University Scholar has presented me with countless opportunities to get involved on campus, and I've met Schol- ars who I am certain will remain lifetime friends. The Schol- ars program helps to make Stony Brook a less intimidating campus and a considerably more exciting place to be!

University Scholars has greatly enhanced my undergraduate experience at Stony Brook. The program enabled me to discover several opportunities to get involved on campus through which I met many faculty and staff members that have shaped my time here as well as developed important friendships with students along the way. During my first year, I participated in the University Scholars Environmental Sustainability Challenge which allowed me to explore ways to make the Stony Brook campus more eco-friendly as well as develop my own interest in the environment. University Scholars also provided guidance on how I could become an undergraduate research assistant in a lab. I currently work in a marine ecology lab researching marine conservation issues. I participated in the Undergraduate Fellows program during my sophomore year where I worked as a T.A for a University Scholars freshman seminar class providing helpful information to new students. I am also a peer mentor for the program and individually assist new University Scholars students the summer before their freshman year with any concerns they have about beginning life in college. University Scholars also encouraged me to participate in two study abroad programs which have definitely been the highlight of my Stony Brook career. The summer after my freshman year, I traveled to Alcala, Spain where I took culture and history classes in Spanish. After completing the program, I was offered an internship at the International Academic Programs Office where I continue to work informing students about international programs and encouraging them to go abroad. Through the internship, I gained interest in a study abroad program in Tanzania which I participated in after my junior year. It has been the most amazing and eye opening experience I have had at Stony Brook. I would have never found many of these wonderful opportunities if it had not been for the University Scholars program.

When I first got accepted to Stony Brook I had no idea what to expect from the University Scholars program. As the year went on, however, I learned that it is an excellent program that has opened me up to many opportunities on campus. In the Fall, I started The Skateboarding Club with another scholar after meeting at the Ice Cream Social. In the Spring I attended a workshop about getting involved on campus and that exposed me to excellent programs like the Undergraduate Student Government, Commuter Assistants and Orientation Leaders where I have made a ton of new friends and met some of the nicest people on campus. University Scholars is an amazing program for helping new students acclimate to Stony Brook University.
