Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

Award: |
Each recipient will receive a framed certificate and medallion, which may be worn at commencement. There will be a ceremony at SUNY Albany in the Spring. |
Description: |
This award is given annually to a very select number of graduating seniors who have demonstrated, and been recognized, for the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, campus involvement, community service, creative and performing arts, athletics, and/or career achievement. |
SBU Deadline: |
December 19, 2012. Nomination forms must be submitted to Karen Kernan, Campus Representative, for consideration of campus nomination/endorsement. {Note: a maximum of 14 can be endorsed}. Reference letters are not required. Please note the criteria for this award:

H. Lee Dennison Valedictorian Award

Description: |
The H. Lee Dennison Valedictorian Award goes to the graduating senior who entered Stony Brook as a transfer student, completed at least 60 credits of letter grade work , and attained the highest cumulative grade point average in that work. |
Distinguished Community Service Award

Ward Melville Valedictorian Award

| Description: | This William and Teresa Meyer Award for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is presented annually to a deserving student who has excelled in Asian or Middle Eastern Studies. Strong candidates for the award, should highlight particular study in Middle Eastern or Asian Studies. Additionally, a dedication to further study in some aspect of Middle Eastern or Asian Studies, and/or an aim to work in that part of the world are highly valued. |

Elisabeth Luce Moore Award for International and Religious Studies

Provost Award for Academic Excellence

Description: |
This award is given annually to a very select number of graduating seniors who have shown true academic excellence, not just in the classroom, but in other ways as well, in research or creative activities, or in building an academic community. |
SBU Deadline: |
Faculty/staff interested in nominating a graduating senior for this award should send a letter summarizing the reasons for the nominee's candidacy to Karen Kernan by April 5. Please also include the nominee's ID#, a resume, and a description of the student's achievements beyond the classroom (e.g. co-authorship of a paper, presentation at national meetings and/or professional conferences, development of an outstanding creative project). Note that students previously nominated for the Chancellor's award for Student Excellence will also be considered eligible for the Provost's award (i.e. no additional letters/nomination materials required). |
Benjamin and David Scharps Award (Essay Contest)

Award of $1,500 for the Best 2,000 Word Paper and Award of $1,000 for the Runner-Up. Additionally all entrants will receive certificates of participation. |
Description: |
The award is given on the basis of an essay on a selected legal topic that changes annually. The essay has a maximum length of 2,000 words excluding the bibliography. |
Requirement: |
University endorsement required. Each participating SUNY campus may submit a maximum of three essays. Competition is open to students in junior and senior years. Students interested in legal issues, or interested in pursuing a career in the legal field, are especially encouraged to apply. Please contact UAA Scholarships office if interested/eligible. |

William J. Sullivan Award

Presented annually by Stony Brook University in honor of Justice William J. Sullivan, late chairperson of the Stony Brook Council. The Sullivan Award is the most prestigious service award the University presents to a graduating senior. It represents the University's recognition of outstanding service contributions to the development of academic and student life on the campus. |

Undergraduate Recognition Awards

Students may be nominated for awards in Academic Excellence or Outstanding Achievement. Awards for Academic Excellence are given for academic accomplishments that go beyond the classroom experience. Awards for Outstanding Achievement are presented for accomplishments that relate to the life of the university and surrounding community. The sub categories for Outstanding Achievement are Athletics, Community Service and Leadership. |
Requirement: |
Nominees must be matriculated students, have completed at least two semesters at Stony Brook University, and be currently registered for a minimum of 9 credits. Nominees must be nominated for either Academic Excellence (minimum GPA 3.4) or Outstanding Achievement (min GPA 2.75). We suggest that nomination letters should be accompanied by support letters, a resume or list of accomplishments and other pertinent materials. |
