Applying to the Honors College

Application procedures for incoming freshmen:

  • Submit the Common Application and Supplement (including essays) by January 15th. Students must write an essay on Topic #1: Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you. This essay is in addition to any other essays you submit with your application. Scholars for Medicine and Scholars for Dental Medicine applicants must also submit a second essay: Paint a verbal portrait of an ideal physician (or dentist) and tell us about the experiences you have had that have helped to shape this ideal.
  • StudentsSubmit all supporting documentation (including high school/college transcripts, SAT/ACT/AP scores, two teacher evaluations, and counselor evaluation) by February 1st.

Admissions Criteria:

Admission to the Honors College is based on a range of criteria. We are looking for bright, energetic students who have demonstrated an ability to succeed in our rigorous academic program and to take advantage of the research, creative, and cultural opportunities available at Stony Brook . Admission is highly competitive.

StudentsFor High School Students Applying for the Freshman Year:

Minimum criteria for consideration typically include a combined score of 1300 on the critical reading and math components of the SAT or an ACT composite score of 29 and an unweighted high school average of 93 or higher (on a 100 point scale) or 3.7 or higher (on a 4.0 scale). It is important to have succeeded in challenging courses while showing energy and leadership in extracurricular areas of interest, such as the visual, performing, and literary arts, athletics, sciences, community service, or student government.

*Meeting typical minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to consider applicants with credentials below these minimums based on extraordinary circumstances, including excelling in the face of adversity and overcoming life obstacles.
