Academic Standing, Progress and Retention

At Stony Brook, academic standing is defined by cumulative grade point average. All undergraduate students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative average of 2.00 to be considered in good academic standing.

The academic standing of our undergraduates is reviewed at the end of each semester and students are notified if they are at risk academically and/or if the are in jeopardy of being suspended or dismissed. Please see the section on Policies and Procedures for additional information about academic standing at Stony Brook and the retention system which is designed to identify and provide academic support to students in academic difficulty.

Appeals Process for Exceptions to University Policies and Procedures

Students have an obligation for reviewing, understanding and abiding by University regulations, procedures, requirements, and deadlines as presented in student publications. On occasion, extraordinary circumstances permit students to request an exception to an academic regulation or deadline.

The Executive Officer for the Committee on Academic Standing and Appeals (CASA) in Undergraduate Academic Affairs considers requests from students through a petition process. Petition requests include late adds of courses, late registration, late withdrawals (after published university deadlines), requests for over- and under-loads, retaking courses for the third time, academic renewal, changes of credit, and academic standing. registration changes, course loads, and academic reinstatement.

Appeals of the Executive Officer’s decisions are considered by the full CASA committee. Decisions made by the CASA committee may be appealed to the Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and must be submitted in writing no later than one week following the committee's decision. Any subsequent appeal (to either the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education or the University's President) will be accepted no later than one week following the decision made by the Assistant Provost. Please see Requests for Academic Exceptions and Appeals.

Please note:

  • Deadlines for selected petition requests and other appeals are established by Undergraduate Academic Affairs and announced each term. Typically, an appeal must be submitted within one week of the date of the earlier decision.
  • Academic reinstatement appeals must be submitted at least five business days before the start of the semester.
