Special Initiatives

Stony Brook University and the Office of Transportation and Parking Operations have a variety of special "Green Initiatives" underway that promote environmental conservation and green technologies.

Such Green Initiatives include:

BioDiesel in Stony Brook Buses
The Stony Brook University bus fleet has been operating on a BioDiesel (B20) blend since April of 2005. The BioDiesel blend, which is a mixture of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and vegetable oil products, offers several advantages. The vegetable component is a renewable resource while the blend produces significantly lower emission levels. Moreover, this initiative helps the University comply with the State's regulatory requirements regarding the use of 'greener' forms of energy.
Alternative Energy Sources for Stony Brook Buses
The University is also considering the use of alternative energy sources, including the potential use of diesel-hybrid and vegetable powered buses. Such projects are underway and look to increase Stony Brook University's sustainability initiative.
Electric Vehicles at Stony Brook University
The University is expanding the use of electric vehicles in its University vehicle fleet. Such electric vehicles are battery powered and emit zero emissions while in use on campus at the University.
