MFA in Dramaturgy


The MFA in Dramaturgy at SBU fosters practical and theatrical approaches to the creation of new and innovative work for the theatre through an interdisciplinary, collaborative curriculum encompassing playwriting, directing, and emerging forms and technologies. Students will pursue a course of study that includes Dramaturgy, Directing, Playwriting, Literary Management, Collaborative Processes, Theory and Criticism, Dramatic Literature and Theatre History. This three-year program includes a core curriculum, production / lab work, the MFA Project, MFA Thesis, and a Professional Internship.

Students may take advantage of course offerings and programming at our Stony Brook Manhattan and Stony Brook Southampton campuses.

MA Theatre


The Department of Theatre Arts offers a 30-credit Master of Arts in Theatre. The program immerses students in the study of theatre history, dramatic literature and theories of theatre and performance. Through coursework and practice MA students are exposed to the oldest traditions and newest theatrical innovations of the theatre. Successful students will be qualified to matriculate into theatre-related programs on the MFA or PhD level.
