In the United States and in a number of other countries around the world, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is an effective way to demonstrate that a building project is truly "green." The LEED green building rating system, developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington D.C.- based, nonprofit coalition, is designed to benchmark the design, construction and operation of high-performance buildings. The LEED certification process includes a rigorous third-party commissioning process which offers compelling proof that the building or project is performing as designed. Here at Stony Brook University all new buildings are currently being designed to LEED standards and many are seeking the actual certification through the USGBC.
