Asphalt Recycling Program
Between FY 2006 - 2009 (3yrs), Stony Brook University recycled over 187,491 tons of asphalt, brick, and concrete material from campus construction projects and converted that material into a reusable product referred to as "stone pack". The machine you see in the pictures below pulverizes the construction related debris into an aggregate which is then mixed with dirt. This end product has excellent compaction qualities and is utilized in the construction of new campus roadways and the maintenance of existing roadways. Along with the natural resource conservation benefits this process helped save the University approximately $5 million dollars in avoided disposal costs and product supply.
