Office of Sustainability EcoLeaders

Welcome to Stony Brook University EcoLeaders. EcoLeaders is a student leadership program that focuses on raising positive awareness of environmental issues and encouraging sustainable practices at the University. The EcoLeader Program started in fall 2012 and is operated by the Office of Sustainability, which reports in to the Division of Facilities & Services. The programs' goals are to increase students' knowledge on important environmental issues such as conservation, sustainability, recycling, and ecological awareness in the context of the University setting.

Program Overview

Program Overview

The EcoLeader Program is facilitated by students and places an emphasis on communication and peer to peer learning. EcoLeaders work to evaluate their environment, consider sustainable practices, communicate best practices and support the University's initiatives. EcoLeaders may be affiliated with other Stony Brook University student organizations, such as Undergraduate Student Government, and are encouraged to communicate with other organization members in regards to sustainability, conservation and recycling. The organizational structure of the EcoLeader Program is based on a number of representatives from different areas, including representatives from University student organizations, whose "focus" is dependent on their involvement at the University. EcoLeaders have an opportunity to work with campus sustainability leaders, communicate with various departments and create programs and events that challenge their peers to adopt a more sustainable behavior.
