Program Description
Karibu Tanzania (Welcome to Tanzania)! Stony Brook University offers students the opportunity to experience the cultural and natural landscapes of northern Tanzania. The itinerary includes one week at Stony Brook University campus with an intensive classroom introduction to the national language of Tanzania (Kiswahili), Tanzania history and culture and four weeks “in country” at four different locations. This latter portion of the schedule will include a six day safari to a number of game parks including: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengetti.

Schedule & Locations

Week 1: Orientation on the SBU campus.

Week 2: Maji Ya Chai Student Center near Mount Kilimanjaro.  In addition to  instruction,  participants will organize group cultural programs. A one day hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.

Week 3: Impala Hotel, Arusha. Continued classroom instruction, a fieldtrip to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a museum, local markets, and schools. 

Week 4: Mto Wa Mbu village in Maasailand on the outskirts of Lake Manyara National Park.  Completion of classroom instruction.

Week 5: Tented Safari to the National Parks. Group departure from Arusha to Amsterdam for connecting flight to JFK. 

Undergraduate Courses Offered
    All students will register for the following:
        ANT 310 Ethnography—3 credits
        ANT 311 Immersion in Another Culture (DEC J) - 3 credits
    Students may elect to take the following:
        ANT 487 Independent Study (optional)

Health Insurance
International health insurance is included in the Program Fee

Eligibility
  • Language proficiency is NOT required
  • All undergraduates in good academic standing may apply
Cost
  • Administrative Fee: $200
  • Tuition: $207/credit for NY residents, $536/credit for non-residents
  • Program Fee: $3,250 (includes room, 2 meals/day, group excursions, and international health insurance)
  • Airfare: Students are encouraged to book flights early to secure the best price
Application Deadline
  • March 1, 2010
  • Late applications will be considered at the Program Director’s discretion
