SUMMER 2013 IN TANZANIA – An Academic Safari

Program Type: Group experience led by SBU faculty

Dates: May 21 - June 17, 2013

Program Description: Karibu Tanzania (Welcome to Tanzania)!  Stony Brook University offers students the opportunity to experience the cultural and natural landscapes of northern Tanzania on an academic and service learning program.  The itinerary includes one week at Stony Brook University campus with an intensive classroom introduction to the national language of Tanzania (Kiswahili), Tanzania history and culture and  four weeks “in country” at four different locations.  This latter portion of the schedule will include a four day safari to a number of game parks including: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti.


Schedule & Locations:

Week 1: Orientation on the SBU campus.
Week 2: Maji Ya Chai Student Center near Mount Kilimanjaro.  In addition to instruction, participants will organize group cultural  and service learning programs. Excursions include: a one day hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro and local schools
Week 3: Impala Hotel, Arusha. Continued classroom instruction, a fieldtrip to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a museum, local markets, and schools. 
Week 4: Mto Wa Mbu village in Maasai land on the outskirts of Lake Manyara National Park.  Completion of classroom instruction and service learning component.
Week 5: Tented Safari to the National Parks including: Lake Manyara, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area. Group departure from Arusha (JRO) to Amsterdam for connecting flight to JFK. 

Undergraduate Courses Offered:
All participants will take a total of 6 to 9 credits

All students will register for the following:

  • ANT 310 Ethnography—3 credits
  • ANT 311 Immersion in Another Culture (DEC J) - 3 credits
Students may elect to take the following:
  • ANT 487 Independent Study – 3 credits

Service Learning:
There will be an educational experience requiring students to participate in an organized service activity in the local community and a formal reflection on this activity

Health Insurance:
International coverage through the SUNY provider, HTH Worldwide, is mandatory and included in the Program Fee.

Program Costs:

  • $60 Application Processing Fee
  • $200 Administrative Fee (non-refundable)
  • Tuition costs: $232 per credit for New York residents, $675 per credit for non-residents
  • $3,475 Program Fee: (includes housing, three meals per day, group excursions, and international health insurance)
  • Airfare: All participants will fly as a group with a staff member. Upon acceptance, students will be given the necessary flight information and will purchase tickets individually. Students are encouraged to book early to secure the best price.
Eligibility:
  • All undergraduate college students in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher) may apply.
  • Language proficiency is NOT required.

  • Application deadline extended to May 1, 2013.
  • Applicants are notified of an admissions decision on a rolling basis, so the sooner one applies, the sooner one can receive a decision!
  • Late applications considered at the Program Director’s discretion.
