Program Description

Experience SBU’s international summer school in St. Petersburg - Russia’s cultural center since its creation by Peter the Great in the early 18th Century. This summer school, founded by SBU Professor of Linguistics John Bailyn, is housed at St. Petersburg State University, Russia’s oldest university. The summer school attracts not only students from throughout Russia and Europe, but also an international faculty who offer courses in a variety of disciplines. Participants will earn 6 to 9 credits and fulfill general education, upper-division, and major/minor requirements.

Program Highlights
  • Experience Peter the Great’s historic city, including the White Nights and the Hermitage
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum designed to accommodate a wide range of academic needs and interests
  • Study and live with students from overseas who are also participating in the international summer school
Courses Offered

All participants must take a minimum of 6 credits or a maximum of 9 credits

Eligibility

  • Language proficiency is NOT required.
  • All undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing may apply.
Cost
  • Application Processing Fee: $60
  • Administrative Fee: $200
  • University Fees: $100
  • Undergraduate Tuition: : $220/credit for NY residents, $613/credit for non-residents. Graduate Tuition: $370/credit for NY residents, $632/credit for non-residents.
  • Program Fee: $1,675 (includes housing, one meal per day, metro pass, group excursions, and international health insurance)
  • Visa Fee: $170 (additional fees may apply).
  • Airfare: All participants will fly as a group. Upon acceptance, students will be given the necessary flight information and will purchase tickets individually. Students are encouraged to book early to secure the best price.

Program Description

The 2012 Advanced Critical Language Institute for Russian Immersion (ACLI) is specifically designed to help advanced students improve their fluency in all aspects of the Russian language. ACLI students pledge to speak only Russian for the duration of the program. ACLI students enjoy Russian speaking homestays while studying for four to five hours daily in small groups with native speaking specialists from St. Petersburg State University, one of Russia’s oldest and most famous educational institutions. In addition to Russian language classes, the ACLI curriculum includes program-specific lectures led by local faculty, film screenings and discussions, and a dynamic cultural program designed to allow participants to see the many faces of St. Petersburg.

  • Family stays with Russian-speaking families
  • Weekly lecture series on contemporary culture
  • Weekly Russian film series with discussion
  • Nine credits, undergraduate or graduate, transferrable to your local institution

Living Arrangements
ACLI students are placed in home-stays with local Russian-speaking families.

  • Successful completion of at least two years of Russian language coursework is required. Previous in-country study experience strongly preferred.

    • NY residents: $1,980 ($220/credit)
    • Non-residents: $5,517 ($613/credit)
  • Graduate Tuition for 9 total credits:
    • NY residents: $3,330 ($370/credit)
    • Non-residents: $5,688 ($632 /credit)
  • Program Fee: $1890 (includes home stays in a Russian speaking household, group excursions, international health insurance, standard visa and registration fees.)
  • Airfare: Upon acceptance into ACLI, students are encouraged to book flights early to secure the best price
