Program Description

Barbados offers an intensive three-week, multi-disciplinary program designed for students who wish to enrich their academic and cultural experience. Students will spend three weeks in Barbados, examining the society and culture of this independent Caribbean nation, small in size, and great in history, in social and economic development, as well as in natural beauty. The program will combine classroom instruction with off-campus visits to sites of historic and current interest, during which students will be encouraged to interact with the Barbadian people. Pre-departure orientation and post-return debriefing sessions will be conducted at Stony Brook.

Undergraduate Courses Offered
  • All participants must register for the following course:
    • AFS 487 – Research in Africana Studies – 3 credits
  • And EITHER AFH 391 – Topics in Africana Studies: Inside the Caribbean -The Barbados Experience (DEC G)- 3 credits
  • OR AFS 421 Topics in Africana Studies: Inside the Caribbean - The Barbados Experience 3 credits
Health Insurance
International health insurance is included in the Program Fee

Eligibility
  • Language proficiency is NOT required.
  • All undergraduates in good academic standing may apply.
Cost
  • Application Processing Fee: $60
  • Administrative Fee: $200
  • Tuition costs: $220 per credit for New York residents, $613 per credit for non-residents
  • Program Fee: $3,000 (includes housing, two meals per day, group excursions, and international health insurance)
  • Airfare: All participants will fly as a group with the program director. Upon acceptance, students will be given the necessary flight information and will purchase tickets individually. Students are encouraged to book early to secure the best price.
