Program Description: The University of Messina, set in the heart of the culturally-rich Mediterranean region, is one of the most important and prestigious universities in southern Italy. As part of this direct enrollment program, students participate in classes along with the University of Messina student body. Students select from a wide variety of courses in various disciplines, including economics, engineering, humanities, law, pharmacology, political science, and social sciences. A member of Erasmus program of the EU, the University of Messina is a top European University with a location in the port city of Messina. This allows attending students to partake in Italian life at the same time as studying and traveling throughout Europe.

Program Description: Lumsa is located in the historic center of Rome and in one of the most beautiful and historically rich areas of the city. It provides students with the opportunity to fully embrace all that Rome has to offer. Students study alongside other Italian students while taking classes taught in the host language. Areas of study include Philosophy, Law, Education, Communications, Political Science, Psychology and more. Florence University of the Arts (FUA)

Program Description: Florence University of the Arts is an Italian institution of higher education situated in the historic center of Florence. Modeled on the liberal arts curricular tradition, FUA offers a wide variety of courses in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences and natural sciences. FUA has a highly qualified and dedicated international faculty, a large proportion of which is of Italian nationality.

Participants will take a minimum of 12 credits, 6 of which will be in Italian language or Italian culture. Students who have NOT had previous experience with Italian will take an introductory course. Students who have studied Italian at their home university will take a placement exam to determine the appropriate level of instruction.

Service Learning

There will be an educational experience requiring students to participate in an organized service activity in the local community and a formal reflection on this activity

Program Costs:

  • $60 Application Processing Fee
  • $200 Administrative fee (non-refundable)
  • $6,500 Program Fee per semester (Includes shared apartment, three-day academic field trip to Sicily, 30 meal vouchers, cell phone rental, application fee, and orientation fee)
  • $2,935 SUNY Undergraduate Tuition per semester for NY residents, $8,905 per semester for non-residents
  • $97/month (approximately): International Health Insurance must be purchased through Stony Brook University
  • Airfare: Students should book flights early to secure the best fare. Flight information will be released by the advisor upon acceptance to the program. It is required purchase the group flight.

Accommodation Information:

All participants are housed in apartments in the vicinity of campus and housing costs are included in the Program Fee. The FUA Housing Coordinator secures apartments located in the historic city center on behalf of participants. The apartments are each unique, but will include the following features:

  • Within walking distance of school facilities (no more than 20 minutes)
  • Common living space with kitchen
  • Multiple occupancy bedrooms
  • One bathroom for every four students
  • Washing machine

Accepted applicants will be required to apply for an Italian Visa. The Stony Brook University study abroad advisor will provide more information about this process upon acceptance.
