Computer Training Courses

All of the following courses are held in SPD's computer labs, room N114 or room N121 of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) building. Students may be eligible for tuition support by the Suffolk County Department of Labor. Call 631-853-6600 for more information.

Microsoft Word

Introduction to Microsoft Word
NCE 316 • 5 sessions • Fee: $299
This course provides an introduction to the most popular word processing program. Streamline workflow by learning shortcuts. Topics include: creating, saving, editing and printing a document, spell check, thesaurus, search and replace, moving text, multiple document management, and desktop publishing functions, including picture and file insertion, templates, styles and newspaper columns, and tables and document forms (mailing labels and envelopes).
Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

This advanced course covers footnotes, document generation, mail merge functions, automatic paragraph numbering, styles and document compare functions.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Microsoft Word or equivalent experience.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel
NCE 314 • 5 sessions • Fee: $299
This introductory course demonstrates the power and ease that makes Microsoft Excel the most-widely used spreadsheet application for office and home financial planning. Accountants, office managers, budget managers, even the family financial planner, will benefit from learning the basics of Excel. Topics include: basics of spreadsheet design, entering data, editing, formatting and printing worksheets, and implementing formulae and functions. The course emphasizes hands-on exercises to reinforce lessons.

Managing Data with Access

This course offers an introduction to the most widely used database management program. An integral and powerful part of the Microsoft Office suite, Access aids budget managers, accountants, and office managers by efficiently organizing customer and inventory information. Topics include how to create databases, forms, filters and reports.

Add power to your database by creating custom forms and reports, and learning how to use advanced techniques with tables, queries and macros. There will be a review on the use of relational databases and mastering relationships.

Creating Dynamic Presentations with PowerPoint

A must for sales professionals, trainers, teachers and business presenters, this course demonstrates how to create and combine text and graphics for professional-looking business presentations. Learn to create your own slide presentation in a minimum amount of time.

Website Design

Adobe Dreamweaver CS 5.5
NCE 328 • 9 sessions • Fee $589

Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript and Dynamic HTML. This course will cover topics such as basic page creation, layout tables, frames v. no frames, how to edit HTML, internal FTP capabilities, templates and how to manage workflow.

In addition, the last 2- 3 sessions will focus on separating the content of a website from the style. We will focus on how to create Cascading Style Sheets and how to apply the style sheets to website(s).
Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

Adobe Fireworks CS5.1
NCE 327 • 3 sessions • Fee $209
Create web graphics, from a simple logo to a sophisticated rollover or pop-up menu, with this user-friendly program from the leader in web design software applications. Fireworks writes the JavaScript required for complex web graphics, and seamlessly merges with Dreamweaver, Adobe's web layout program. This course is a thorough introduction to this powerful program. Students will create their own graphics to be incorporated into their website designs in Dreamweaver.

Adobe Flash Professional CS 5.5
NCE 329 • 12 sessions • Fee: $749
Adobe Flash is the professional standard for producing high-impact Web experiences. The focus is on creating animation for the World Wide Web. This course will guide students through the fundamentals of animation such as Flash drawing, story boarding, creating layers, key framing, character animation, and creating interactive animation. Mastering the use of these advanced features is considered the industry standard for web animators. By the end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of Flash basics, plus the know-how to build Flash projects incorporating sound, interactivity, and engaging animations.

This is an advanced certificate program for experienced web users who want to learn the tools that web professionals use. The program incorporates the following Adobe products: Dreamweaver (the industry-standard HTML design program), Fireworks (for web graphics and javascript buttons), and Flash (to create eye-catching animations). The price for this certificate reflects a 15% discount off individual class prices. To receive the discount, students must register for all courses at the same time. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test and Introduction to the Internet or equivalent level of knowledge.

Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1
NCE 321 • 12 sessions • Fee: $749
Professional artists, amateur photographers and Web novices should know the fundamentals of Photoshop, the most powerful image editing software on the market. Whether you want to learn how to prepare photographs for offset printing or just want to create good-looking scans for your personal homepage, a working knowledge of Photoshop is essential. Topics covered will include the Photoshop work area, image basics, working with selections, working with layers, painting, masks, channels, creating special effects, basic pen tool techniques and creating images for electronic publishing. We will be working in the Windows environment. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion.

Personal Computer Basics

Keyboarding
NCE 312 • 6 Sessions • Fee:$799
This foundational course is targeted for beginners who want to move from hunting-and-pecking to typing with ease, and for experienced typists who want to break bad habits and improve their accuracy. Focus will be on subjects pertinent to today's business professional, with the goal of learning to type with maximum speed and efficiency.
Exercises include: typing simple words, charts, tables, and columns; business letters, cover letters, and resumes; reports and manuscripts; and electronic messaging. Embedded in the user-friendly exercises are helpful tips on email etiquette, eight ways to get the results you want from your writing, and a section on "punctuation made easy." This foundational keyboarding course will help you to perfect your typing skills.
