Career Development Courses

The following Open E nrollment offerings may be taken separately or as part of the Professional Development Certificate Program.

The focus groups are designed to assist adult learners in recognizing issues and deficiences in communication and interpersonal skills and taking positive steps to overcome them. Small group settings provide an informal environment for personalized and comfortable learning. All groups are interactive, creating a safe environment for participation.

Creative Writing
NCE 401 • 4 sessions • Fee: $180
An introduction to creative writing that will lend itself to the electronic world of desktop publishing and web page development. Learn how to develop dynamic text and eye-catching headlines while making the most of the limited space you have to work with online.

Business Communications
NCE 402 • 6 sessions • Fee: $270
This course was designed to provide the participants with the necessary oral and written communication skills to effectively reach all organizational levels. Covers all phases of business communication from basic grammar to the persuasive writing of memos, letters and reports, to the art of individual and group speaking and purposeful, productive listening.

Team-Building
NCE 403 • 4 sessions • Fee: $225
This course focuses on team-building and reaching consensus in a diverse environment. Improved perceptual, cultural and gender awareness can create positive changes in productivity, teamwork and work relationships. This course will focus on developing strength from an understanding of diversity and respect for individual differences. Topics include: basic management, human relations, delegation, team building, managing change, and coping with fewer resources.

Taking Control of Your Career Development Process

This class will assist those seeking a career change or wishing to enter/re-enter the workforce. Topics include: making career choices, self-assessment, stress management, employment opportunities, job search strategies, creating an effective résumé, the art of being interviewed, and a résumé review and critique.

The Self-Directed Search Workshop

This interactive, self-administered, self-scored, and self-interpreted workshop is designed to assist participants in identifying and exploring career options and gaining insight into their professional/occupation and personal needs.

Career Retooling
NCE 407.6 • 6 sessions • Fee: $270
This course is designed to assist with a focused job search for those who wish for that “perfect” first job or are interested in changing careers. Stop wishing and develop the skills that will enable you to know what jobs are out there and how to go about landing the one you want. Topics include: job opportunities, preparation for and getting the interview, interview skills, negotiating conditions of hire, the Self-Directed Search test, and a class in using Microsoft Word’s résumé wizard to develop a winning résumé.

Effective Sales Techniques
NCE 410 • 5 sessions • Fee: $225
The focus of this training is to provide the basic knowledge and skills of selling, keeping existing customers satisfied, and developing new customers. Topics include: preparing for the sale, successful approaches, creative introductions, dynamic proposals, closing the sale, servicing the customer after the sale, and assessing sales success. The final session will be a class project in developing real-time sales presentations.

Problem Solving

By using objective reasoning participants learn to apply a problem-solving methodology to different practical situations that may arise in the workplace. Topics include: identifying key words and situations, planning appropriate strategies, and techniques for logical reasoning.
