Semester by the Sea: Southampton Arts
In ten transformational weeks, complete an original project while earning 15 college credits.
Imagine a semester abroad, but with the artistic purpose of writing a book, making a movie, or putting on a one-act play. Stony Brook Southampton's Semester by the Sea is an intensive, 10-week course of study arranged around completing one of these creative projects. It's an arts colony for undergraduates, located in the gorgeous Hamptons, a resort community on the East End of Long Island. If you have a strong interest in the arts, but not the opportunity, time or flexibility in your schedule to act on it, then taking off for a Semester by the Sea could be just the ticket.
At the Semester by the Sea, you will take a 15-credit load of five courses, including two writing workshops, two literature courses, and a final project in filmmaking, theater, fiction or poetry. In workshop, you'll work closely with top-notch faculty in small groups of 12. During final project, you'll get individualized attention to your creative needs, with a mentor/advisor to guide you. The two literature courses supplement and inspire your work, and might also help you fulfill General Education requirements at your home institution.
