2013 Southampton International Theatre Workshops
|(L-R) Nick Mangano, John Patrick Shanley, Kate McMullan, Christina Lazaridi, Stephen Adly Guirgis|
We are one of the newest and fastest growing theatre programs in the country. We feature a world-class faculty and you can choose from workshops in Playwriting, Directing, or Acting. If that weren’t enough, you can also attend the many readings, talks, panel discussions, and mini-workshops included in the cost of the workshop.
We are located in one of the most beautiful ocean side towns on the East Coast and draw upon the rich artistic community of Long Island’s East End, as well Manhattan. The village of Southampton offers fine restaurants and shopping, all just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Courtesy shuttles run regularly to the beach and downtown Southampton.
The summer workshops bring together the top theatre and film artists in the world. Our faculty has included Alan Alda, Edward Albee, Emily Mann, John Patrick Shanley, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Marsha Norman, Julie Andrews, Jason Robert Brown, Kathleen Marshall, Terrence McNally, Rinde Eckert, Joe Mantello, Lanford Wilson, Mark Wing-Davey, Mercedes Ruehl, Jon Robin Baitz, and Austin Pendleton.
Theatre students also participate in events sponsored by our partner program in Creative Writing, whose equally impressive roster has included luminaries Billy Collins, Roger Rosenblatt, Ursula Hegi, Meg Wolitzer, Frank McCourt, Melissa Bank, Matthew Klam, Julie Sheehan, and Jules Feiffer.
There’s more. We have recently partnered with the internationally renowned Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA). Master teachers in Chekhov’s psycho-physical acting technique lead workshops with actors who travel to Southampton Arts from around the world.
In case you’re wondering, the food is also great. Catered breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served daily, and you can dine under the tent on our beautiful campus grounds. Post-event receptions are another chance to socialize with fellow workshop participants and our distinguished visiting artists. Late night open-mics round out the day with an opportunity to show your stuff.
The Southampton International Theatre Workshops are sponsored by the MFA in Theatre. Graduate credit is available to eligible students. A limited number of partial scholarships are also available. See Applications & Guidelines.
Southampton Arts provides an idyllic setting for creative cross-pollination. Nowhere else can theatre artists mingle with and draw inspiration from creative artists across so many disciplines, from novelists and poets to filmmakers and visual artists.
Come and get your work done!
