Areas of Interest: Environmental Sociology, Globalization, and Quantitative Methodology.
Professor Shandra's research interests include environmental sociology, globalization, and quantitative methodology. John is completing a series of articles using cross-national data that shows deforestation is largely the result of multinational corporations, international financial institutions, and repressive nations. One of the key conclusions of this work is that it is important to look beyond the "traditional" demographic causes of deforestation. He is also interested in how international non-governmental organizations are mobilizing to reduce various forms of environmental degradation. Some of his earlier work has appeared in Sociological Perspectives, Social Inquiry, and Social Science and Medicine. Currently, John teaches the graduate statistics seminar.
