Medicine, Education, Stratification, Culture, Social Psychology, Deviance | The dissertation explores issues of health disparities. While medical sociologists have shown that resources (economic, cultural, social), effect health outcomes, the ways these resources actually have an effect is unclear. I link resources to particular attitutdes and behaviors that scholars of social class have made connections to before (i.e., Melvin Kohn, Annette Lareau, Paul Willis). I show the mechanism by which resources (or lack of resources) become actualized in the form of health outcomes. Research sujects are dialysis patients, a population where the type of resources mentioned above are highly necessary for long-term survival. The project consists of regression analyses based on 200 completed questionnaires, and evidence from 20 in-depth interviews with patients. | Kenneth Feldman |
