MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Laboratory for the Study of Social Systems is to explore the fundamental principles of social organization that make possible both human and animal societies. Research at the Laboratory focuses on simple social systems that can be carefully studied under controlled conditions. Current and recent projects include investigations of the formation of social structures in small groups using dominance hierarchies in fish, the distribution of material resources using vacancy chain processes in humans and hermit crabs, and the organization of collective activity in the food source decisions of ants.
