FAQs
for accepted students What
do I need to do BEFORE the Simons program begins?
Once
you've been accepted into the Simons Summer Research program and received the
name of your research supervisor, we encourage you to contact your mentor directly,
by email first. Ask for recommendations regarding papers you might read to get
a sense of the lab's goals, and ongoing research projects in the lab. Find out
who will be your other colleagues (undergrad and grad students, post docs) in
the lab.
What
about ID cards? other paperwork?
All
Simons Fellows will receive information on the first day of the program regarding
the summer schedule and overall program expecations, as well as practical information
(how to get ID cards). Your stipend award will be distributed at the
final closing reception.

Meals?
The
Student Activities Center (SAC) has a cafeteria available for your use (closes
at 6:00 pm during the summer). There is not one meal plan price: you pay for what
you are buying/eating (pizza slices, wraps, salad bar, burgers, yogurt, cereal,
soup, etc). Some of the buildings on campus have dining carts (including Life
Sciences, the Dental School, The Administration Building) where soup/sandwiches
and snacks are available for purchase. In addition, please note that the Seawolves
Market (located in the SAC, ground floor) offers kosher menu choices for purchase...as
well as clothing items and/or accessories with SBU logos!
Reminders:
Don't eat in the lab! Note
also that when you get your new SBU ID cards with your new SBU ID # (first week),
you and your parents will have the option of putting money on your Stony Brook
ID card for use at the SAC cafeteria. You may want to put money in small increments
since this purchase is non-refundable (i.e. if you don't use it, you lose it).
If you and your parents wish to do this, go to the campus dining site http://www.campusdining.org,
click on meal transactions.."continue"..and see the following instructions
for parents/students.
For Students/Parents: (Red ID Cards) [top]
Quick Deposit - Instantly deposit
value into any student meal plan account for immediate use. This amount can be
deposited using Master Card, Visa, American Express or Discover. You will need
your/your child's 9-digit University ID Number.
(Note:
You won't be able to avail yourself of this option until you have your new SBU
ID #s).
Again,
please be realistic about what you will actually spend. Lunch prices can vary
significantly, based on what you are eating. It is also perfectly fine to use
cash at the SAC cafeteria (putting money on the card doesn't save you money..but
simply allows you to walk around carrying less cash on hand).
Also,
the Jasmine restaurant (in the Wang Center. see http://ws.cc.stonybrook.edu/sb/jasmine/about.shtml)
offers other tasty dining options (Indian, Thai, Chinese & Japanese cuisine).
