Application
Guidelines PROGRAM
DATES:
June 28- August 13, 2010
Fellows must agree to participate full-time on weekdays during the
entire 7-week fellowship period.
ELIGIBILITY:
High school student applicants must be currently
in their junior year and at least 16 years of age by the start of the program. Applicants must be nominated
by their school. No exceptions to these requirements.Students interested in science who have demonstrated independence, creativity and an aptitude for doing hands-on work are especially encouraged to apply!
HOUSING
OPTION:
Participants can elect to reside on campus during the program. Typically
students return home on weekends; arrangements can be made for out-of-state
students. Students who opt to live on campus will be assigned to a double room
in a university residence hall, supervised by live-in residence staff and will
be responsible for paying their own housing fees prior to the program start date.
Students must sign a consent form agreeing to abide by all housing rules.
AWARD: $1,000 stipend.
DEADLINE
FOR APPLICATIONS:
Applications must be postmarked by JANUARY
15th.
FINDING A RESEARCH MENTOR?: Many students choose to contact Stony Brook faculty and make arrangements to work in specific laboratories/research groups (although this is not required for admission to the program); applicants who have not made such arrangements on their own, upon being selected for the program, will otherwise be assigned to mentors/research groups. Students
who do not have a research placement or mentor at the time of the application
but are actively seeking a mentor for the academic year and or summer and obtain/accept a research placement at SBU prior to March 1 should notify Karen Kernan as soon as possible. Requests for specific mentors (or for changes to the assigned research placement) cannot be accommodated after March 1.
PUTTING THE APPLICATION TOGETHER: Nominated
students are responsible for completing the application form, obtaining at
least three letters of recommendation (two from science or math teachers; one
from a teacher/supervisor of an extracurricular activity) and submitting both
the form and the letters (sealed) to the school guidance department or appropriate
office within their school.
The
school
is responsible for assembling the application materials, which include
an official school transcript, the nomination form, the letters
of recommendation, and the completed application.
Independently
submitted, late or incomplete applications will be disqualified. A
maximum of three students per school may be nominated.
Applicants will generally be notified by April 1st by mail.
