Arts and Sciences Senate
Meeting
March 22, 2010

I.  Approval of minutes from February 15, 2010.  Wording in VII. Para 2:  change from “Kane Gillespie felt there should be more than one member of Southampton” to “Kane Gillespie felt there should be no more than one member of Southampton”.

II.  Approval of Tentative Agenda:  approved.

III.  CAS Dean’s Report (N. Squires).

  • The budget situation is grim.
  • President’s Points on Budget (data that President Stanley put together for talk with legislators about the impact of the NYS budget cuts to SUNY.  President Stanley is also trying to promote PHEEIA):  09/10 – 264 class sections cut, 76 Grad student lines cut, 74 Adjuncts cut.  If there is an additional 10M cut to the Provost’s budget there will be 440 class sections cut, 126 grad student lines cut and 123 Adjuncts cut in 10/11.  Current estimate of the actual cut to the provost:  15M.
  • Cannot rely on Foundations to bail us out next year.
  • Provost’s strategic funding priorities:  Teaching, investment in campus wide resources, graduate education, Undergraduate out-of-class (UG Colleges, Honors and other offerings), and Support of narrow research efforts (centers).
  • CAS preparations for next year include meeting with the Chairs and ATC’s from each department to focus on cutting instructional costs, reducing departmental expenses, moving expenditures and increasing revenue.
  • Departments have to start analyzing their programs (itemize and prioritize).

IV. CASA Report (D. Hildenbrand)

  • Number of Casa appeals has gone down from Spring 2008 to Fall 2009.
  • Spring 2008:  37 approved, 28 denied; Fall 2008:  31 approved, 19 denied, 2 tabled; Spring 2009:  27 approved, 10 denied; Fall 2009:  11 approved, 8 denied.

Vote in favor of accepting the CASA Report:  All in favor.

V.  Formal Vote on Name Change from “Women’s Studies” to “Women’s and Gender Studies”

  • Ritch Calvin:  Two reasons for name change:  One is that it is happening in the field a lot, many programs around the country are changing their names.  And second, the name change is a better reflection of what we are actually doing/teaching in the classroom in the Women’s Studies program.
  • Vote in favor of name change with caveat that any changes in name of majors goes through the proper governance and administrative channels.

All in favor, none opposed, 1 abstention.

VI.  President’s Report (A. De Chambeau)

  • Songdo update:  After initial gathering of questions, there were no volunteers to form a task force to further investigate the issues.  The University Senate has a group working on Songdo.
  • Election Update:  Nominations will be accepted until March 26th.  To speed up the process of getting the ballots ready, please email Laurie your Solar ID number.
  • We currently have one nominee for President.  Nominations for this position will close on March 26th and a vote will take place at the April Senate meeting.
