The Blue Gene Project and Designing Applications for Massively Parallel
Systems

Abstract: In October 2009, IBM's BlueGene family of supercomputers will be awarded
the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President Obama.
We will review some of the major technical decisions that were made during
the ten years of this project as well as factors that led to its
remarkable success. I will also describe several of the scientific
applications that have benefited from BlueGene systems since they became
generally available in 2005. Finally, I will discuss some challenges we
face exploiting this technology for commercial and business computing as
well as some early successes.
